Arby’s $44,100 Hat is Now Revealing at Newseum
ATALANTA (Aug 14, 2014) – Arby’s, America’s leading Fast Crafted® restaurant brand with more than 3,300 restaurants worldwide, today announced that they are going to publicly display the Arby’s VIP hat, which cost $44,100 and was won in a bid to Pharrell Williams on the day of the Academy Awards. The hat will be displayed at the Newseum in Washington D.C. as an exhibition of pop culture history. The auction proceeds will benefit Pharrell Williams’ charity organization - From One Hand To AnOTHER - which provides educational S.T.E.A.M.M. related tools needed for the promising and talented youth in at-risk communities.
“This news-making hat represents the power of social media to connect people around the globe to events as they are happening,” said Cathy Trost, the SVP of exhibits and programs at the Newseum.
The origins of this charity event traced back to March, when Pharrell Williams attended the Academy Awards wearing a Vivien Westwood mountain hat that he owned for years and which had a striking resemblance to the Arby’s logo. Immediately, funny comparisons were drawn on Twitter. Arby’s high-profile Twitter feed posted, “Hey @Pharrell can we have our hat back? #GRAMMYs.” This triggered Pharrell Williams’ response, “Y’all tryna start a roast beef?”
Weeks after, Pharrell Williams tweeted Arby’s back, “Hey Arby’s, you want my hat? Now is your chance,” while putting up his hat for auction on eBay for his charity organization - From One Hand To AnOTHER. Arby’s decided to support a great cause and purchased Williams’ hat in an online auction with a winning bid of $44,100.
The Arby’s hat will be displayed at the Newseum for two months through Oct 26, 2014.
